Minutes - Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4B

December 17, 2008 Special Public Meeting

Adopted on January 22, 2009

The meeting was held at the Takoma Recreation Center, 300 Van Buren Street, NW.  It started at 7:05 pm, Chair Douglass Sloan (4B09) presiding.  Also present were ANC Commissioners Sara Green (4B01), Faith Wheeler (4B02), Frederick Grant (4B03), and Yvonne Jefferson (4B08).  A quorum was present for all votes.

1. The agenda was adopted unanimously in a show-of-hands vote following a motion from Commissioner Green, with one change.  The application from Sabor Catering for an ABC license will be heard before the discussion on the Curtis Chevrolet site development project.

2.  In a unanimous show-of-hands vote following a motion made by Commissioner Grant, the Commission adopted the following motion: "We support the designation of landmark status for the Sheridan Theater and its adjacent Park and Shop retail stores located at 6201 to 6221 Georgia Avenue, NW."

The vote followed presentations and discussions with James Ortega, an attorney representing the Theater's owner, Hazel Broadnax, the President of the Emory Beacon of Light, Inc., a community group with a grant to install a new facade on the Theater and the Shopping Center, Patsy Fletcher, of the D.C. Office of Historic Preservation, and Peter Selfton, of the D.C. Preservation League.

3.  In a 4-0-1 show-of-hands vote following a motion made by Commissioner Grant, the Commission supported the application of Sabor Catering, 6209 Georgia Avenue, NW, for a Retailer's "C" Restaurant license and to offer "occasional DJ and occasional Karaoke," as detailed on the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration's Notice of Public Hearing.

The vote followed a presentation and discussion with one of Sabor's owners, Commissioner Grant, and Merrit Drucker, a D.C. resident familiar with the business who supported granting the license.

1.  Representatives from Foulger-Pratt Development Inc., of Rockville, Maryland, and Curtis Chevrolet discussed plans to build a large retail and residential project on the former Curtis Chevrolet site, 6929 Georgia Avenue, NW, beginning in Summer 20010.

Renderings are available and they agreed to put the designs on the web and to provide additional hard copies of the plans to the Commission.
